Perfume can connect us with our past, present, and future

The history of perfumery is a fascinating story that spans thousands of years and different cultures. The smoke which rises towards the sky carries prayers to the world above: per fumare, in Latin, which gave the word perfume, means "by the smoke". This was a mixture of fragrant substances that can evoke emotions, memories, and sensations. Perfume can also be used for religious, cosmetic, or therapeutic purposes. In the Middle Ages, people used to refer to perfume as healing medicine. They used to make a blend of herbs or medicinal plants to defend against bad smells and diseases, people would carry it containing different herbs, as a kind of olfactory shield.

The Egyptians, known for their elaborate beauty rituals, made significant advancements in perfumery. They invented glass bottles to store and transport perfumes, and used them to anoint their bodies, embalm their dead, and offer to their gods. They also cultivated plants such as lily, jasmine, and rose for their scents. The ancient Greeks and Romans learned from the Egyptians and further developed the art of perfumery. They used perfume for personal hygiene, social status, and erotic attraction. They also experimented with different sources of fragrance, such as animal musk, ambergris, and civet. The Romans were especially fond of perfume and used it lavishly in their baths, fountains, and public spaces.

The Islamic civilization played a crucial role in the history of perfumery by introducing new techniques and ingredients. They also introduced new raw materials such as oud, saffron, sandalwood, and rose water. European perfumery was influenced by the trade routes, and the Renaissance. The trade routes facilitated the exchange of goods and ideas between Europe and Asia. The Renaissance saw a revival of interest in classical culture and science, which inspired new innovations in perfumery.

One of the most famous examples of European perfumery is the eau de Cologne, which was created in the 18th century by an Italian perfumer named Giovanni Maria Farina. He moved to Cologne, Germany, and named his fragrance after his new hometown. He described it as "a scent that reminds me of a spring morning in Italy, of mountain narcissus, orange blossom just after the rain". His eau de Cologne was a light and refreshing blend of citrus oils and herbs that became very popular among the European nobility.

Modern perfumery began in the late 19th century with the discovery of synthetic aroma chemicals that expanded the palette of perfumers. Perfumery was looked upon as a fashion accessory in addition to its medicinal or religious properties.

Today, perfumery is a global and diverse industry that caters to different tastes, preferences, and needs. Perfume can be found in various forms such as reed diffusers, sprays, oils, solids, or candles. Perfume can also be customized or personalized according to individual preferences. Perfume can also be used as a form of art or expression that reflects one's personality, mood, or style. Perfume can enhance our beauty, health, well-being, and happiness.
